Work on creating second greenbelt launched in Herat

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Work on the second greenbelt in Herat city was launched in the presence of traders and government officials on Sunday.

Abdullah Akbari, Urban Development Directorate head and member of the Tree Plantation Commission, said on the occasion that 3,500 tree saplings were being planted on a five-kilometer square area.

Akbari added the Tree Plantation Commission plans to create seven more greenbelts around Herat city, which will make the city greenest and most beautiful city of the country.

Hazrat Ali Abdali, head of the Environment Protection Authority, told Pajhwok Afghan News plantation of trees in Herat city will prevent the air and environment from being contaminated.

He said trees filtered harmful gases emitted from the industrial park.

Industrialists welcomed the initiative and trees could prevent the environment from contamination.

Hamidullah Khadem, head of the Industries and Mines Department, said the greenbelt project had encouraged industrialists to plant trees in and outside of their factories.

Maulavi Mohammad Nasim Sahar, acting director of the Agriculture and Livestock Department, without revealing the number of saplings produced in Heart, told Pajhwok his department had distributed 6,000 seedlings to government offices and people.

Sahar asked people to plant trees and take care of them.

Previously, another greenbelt was created north of Herat city and trees were grown on 50 acres of land.

The provincial office of the Red Crescent Society, in coordination with the Agriculture and Livestock Department of Heart, distributed 42,000 seedlings orchard owners for plantation across the province.
