UK seeks consular access to Britons held in Afghanistan

KABUL (Pajhwok): The UK government says it is in negotiations on the safety of the three British men being held in Afghanistan.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman said on Sunday: “If they’re British citizens (held) abroad, then the UK government is going to do whatever it takes to ensure that they’re safe.”

Speaking to Sky News, she confirmed the British government was in talks and working hard to ensure people´s safety is upheld.”

Braverman added the Foreign Office would be working actively to ensure people’s safety in case of security concerns to British individuals abroad.

Separately, a Foreign Office spokesman said they were trying to secure consular contact with the British nationals.

The detainees include Kevin Cornwell, 53, a British medic, an unnamed Briton managing a Kabul hotel and Miles Routledge.

Scott Richards of Presidium Network also confirmed to Sky News there had been contact between families and the detainees.

“They were able to spend about 10 minutes this morning in an unscripted conversation, which is very important. This is a huge landmark movement for any negotiation with the Taliban…”
