1 killed, 10 injured as flash floods wreak havoc in Takhar

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Heavy rains-induced flooding killed at least one person and injured 10 others and inundated large swathes of farmland in northern Takhar province, officials said on Wednesday.

The flash floods destroyed crops on over 1000 acres of land in Taloqan, Bangi and Eshkamesh districts, Disaster Management Department officials said.

They said efforts to help the victims were underway in coordination with other relevant humanitarian organizations and local authorities.

Mullah Ahmad Seyar Saajid, head of the Disaster Management Directorate, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “It has been raining since last two days which triggered floods that caused both life and financial losses to residents”.

Saajid said over 50 acres of farmland was inundated in Khatayan area of Taloqan city and about 1000 acres in Eshkamesh and Bangi districts.

He added the government and humanitarian organizations were making coordinated efforts to reach the affected people whose number was increasing.

Public Health Department officials said one person died in the floods and ten others injured with four in critical condition.

The previous floods in Takhar province destroyed 120 houses, killed 20 and wounded people and dozens of livestock.
