KABUL (Pajhwok): A two-day meeting on Afghanistan, bringing together special envoys from various countries, is set to begin in Qatar today (Monday).

The UN-convened talks are aimed at reinforcing global engagement around key issues, such as human rights, in particular the rights of women and girls.

The participants will confer on inclusive governance and the need for combating terrorism and drug trafficking, the world body said.

Secretary-General António Guterres is in Doha to host the two-day talks, to which the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has not been invited.

In a statement, the UN said “The meeting is intended to achieve a common understanding within the international community on how to engage with the Taliban on these issues,”

Apart from envoys from the US, China, Russia, Pakistan and other countries, donors are in attendance.

Women have been barred from most secondary education and universities, and prevented from working in most government jobs as well as UN agencies and NGOs.

On Thursday, the UN Security Council denounced the Taliban-imposed restrictions on women and girls, in a resolution, the council called for an urgent reversal of the curbs.

A day earlier, a dozen NGOs, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Global Network of Women Peacebuilders, urged the UN chief to ensure the participation of that diverse Afghan women and civil society representatives – at the meeting.
