ATLATNA (Pajhwok): US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West has said that Doha meeting was not about recognition of Kabul and the political dialogue among Afghans is a central part of solution to all challenges.

He thanked the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres for convening an important group of over 20 special envoys this week in Doha to discuss approaches to Afghanistan.

On Wednesday, West tweeted: “As the UN has made clear, Doha meeting was not about recognition. Focus was identifying shared interests and how we collectively advance them: on terrorism, repression of women & girls, devastating humanitarian crisis, and narcotics outflows, among others.”

The US diplomat said, Countries assigned different priorities to these interests, but among points of consensus: political dialogue among Afghans is a central part of solution to all challenges.

“The UNAMA leadership joined us and continue their vital humanitarian work and engagement with Taliban. Also received critical advice beforehand from diverse group of Afghan women living across country.”

The 2-day UN-led meeting on Afghanistan, held on May First and second was ended on Tuesday, with the UN chief slamming unprecedented curbs on the rights of Afghan women.

Speaking at a press conference after the summit in Doha, Guterres said the Doha meeting was not about recognizing the new Afghan rulers, but about developing a common international approach to dealing with them.

Guterres said collectively all participants were worried about the stability of Afghanistan.

He stated “to achieve our objectives, we cannot disengage” with the Taliban and said “it is difficult to overestimate the gravity of the situation” in the country.
