BAMYAN CITY (Pajhwok): The repair and reconstruction of a 41-kilometre road connecting central Bamyan and Daikundi provinces has kicked off, local officials said on Wednesday.

Public Works Director Mullah Abdul Khaliq Haqmal confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News the rebuilding of the highway from Konak Pass to Waras district centre had got under way.

Haqmal called the highway an important route, connecting the central provinces. Its reconstruction would create facilities for passengers, he hoped.

He added, a team of the Ministry of Public Works, equipped with machinery, was implementing the project.

Najibullah, a driver using the route, complained the Daikundi-Yakawlang road had been damaged extensively. The lousy condition of the highway caused accidents and damaged vehicles, he said.

Abdul Qayoum, an influential figure, said: “A part of the Bamyan-Daikundi road (from Waras to Konak Pass) is vastly damaged. It is very difficult to travel on it.

“Four traffic accidents have occurred over the past couple of months on the road. We have shared this issue with the authorities several times but no attention has been paid to its resolution.”
