Jamaat-i-Islami chief survives suicide attack in Zhob

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok):  A senior Pakistani rightwing leader has survived a suicide attack on his convoy in southwestern Balochistan province, officials say.

Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) chief Sirajul Haq’s convoy came under attack in Zhob district on Friday, police said. At least six people were wounded.

Haq escaped unhurt but his vehicle was damaged in the bombing, in which the attacker alone lost his life.

The Jamaat-i-Islami amir was visiting the area to address a political meeting, his party said, adding Haq was safe.

In a video message JI spokesman Qaisar Sharif said: “Only some cars were damaged and a few people wounded in the attack. The JI leadership is safe.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf, ex-president Asif Ali Zardari and PTI Chairman Imran Khan condemned the attack.
