Logar floods wash away 50 homes, 500 acres of crop fields

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Flash floods washed away dozens of homes and destroyed hundreds of acres of crop fields in this capital city of central Logar province, an official said on Tuesday.

Omar Mansour, the Logar Governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the yesterday’s floods emerged in Babus, Alozi, Haji Gulan and Kalingar areas of Pul Alam city.

Mansour added that dozens of residential houses and hundreds of acres of agricultural land were destroyed by the floods.

He said efforts were being made to conduct a transparent survey of the affected families and provide them with emergency assistance.

He also informed that deputy governor Maulvi Inayatullah Shuja met the flood-affected families and assured them the provision of food and non-food items soon.

On the other hand, Shahidullah Hamraz, press officer at the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, told Pajhwok the floods destroyed large swaths of crops and fruit orchards in Babus area of Pul Alam.

He added the provincial government had appointed a joint delegation to determine the damage caused by the floods and will soon collect accurate information about it.

Rahmatullah, a resident of Babus area, told Pajhwok the floods destroyed around 50 residential houses and crops on nearly 500 acres of land.

According to him, Logar Natural Disaster Management Department and some organizations had provided food and non-food items to the people of the area.

Muhammad Salim, a farmer in Kalingar area, told Pajhwok that his potato, onion, tomato and wheat crops were destroyed by the rains-induced floods.

He urged the government to assist them because the floods had caused them heavy losses.
