Commuters want potholes-ridden Kunar-Nuristan road rebuilt

PARON (Pajhwok): Passengers and drivers say the potholes-ridden road between eastern Kunar and Nuristan provinces has made their lives miserable and should be fundamentally reconstructed.

Rohullah, a driver on the route, said the road connecting Asadabad with Paron had broken at many places, causing mechanical faults in vehicles.

Asadullah, who was travelling from Nuristan to Kunar, said the road’s rundown condition had prolonged their journey from Asadabad to Paron to almost seven hours, which could be covered in three hours if the road was reconstructed.

He added transport fare was also high due to the road’s bad condition and their time was wasted.

Another traveler, Khalid, who came to Paron for sightseeing, said they enjoyed Nuristan’s natural beauty, but the journey exhausted them.

He said the government had declared Nuristan a national park and the road to the province should be rebuilt.

Maulvi Ahmad Nabi, director of Nuristan Public Works department, said they had short and long-term plans for the road and the road’s leveling works had been started and rollers daily pressed the road.

He said as per directives of the Ministry of Public Works and the provincial administration, the road leveling starting from Tarnik area had reached Archno area of Wama district.

He added that the road’s graveling had been included in this year’s development budget and 30 kilometers of the road would be graveled this year and the rest would be graveled after approval of the budget.

The Asadabad-Paron road is about eighty-five kilometers long and is badly damaged due to floods.
