24 couples tie the knot in Ghazni mass wedding ceremony

GHAZNI (Pajhwok): A mass wedding ceremony took place in southern Ghazni province on Thursday, with 24 couples tying the knot.

Hundreds of relatives of the couples attended the mass wedding ceremony held in the afternoon in a private wedding hall in Ghazni city.

One of the organizers of the event, Maulvi Syed Ahmad told Pajhwok that religious scholars of Ghazni province organized the mass wedding ceremony in order to avoid unnecessary and excessive spending. He said today’s ceremony cost 300,000 afghanis.

He said the young couples had been unable to marry due to economic problems.

He added they had organized similar mass wedding ceremonies in the past and this was the 17th such ceremony they organized during the past nine years.

He vowed to continue organizing such mass weddings in order to prevent high costs and high bride prices and to eliminate moral corruption in the society.

One of the participants of the wedding, Mohammad Sohail, told Pajhwok that the country was currently grappling with economic crisis and many young people were jobless and could not arrange their weddings.

He said such mass weddings were cost-effective. He thanked the religious scholars for enabling the couples to get married and avoid high costs.

One of the grooms, Muhammad Hasan Khurdmand, said he was happy to get married in the mass wedding ceremony, adding such ceremonies eluded unnecessary expenses.

He hoped mass weddings would become a culture in the country.

Bride Adila Hussaini told Pajhwok she had been engaged for two years, but her fiance had been unable to arrange their marriage due to economic problems.

Similar mass weddings had taken place in many provinces, but this was the first of its kind in Ghazni .

People say extreme poverty forces young people to go abroad on dangerous smuggling routes to earn money for their weddings and to support their families.
