KABUL (Pajhwok): The president of Uzbekistan has won a new seven-year term in a snap elections, suggest preliminary results.

Shavkat Mirziyoye, who easily trounced a trio of rivals, bagged more than 87 percent of the vote, said Uzbekistan’s election commission on Monday.

According to the Associated Press, the snap election happened after a constitutional referendum enhancing the presidential term from five to seven years.

Amendments to the constitution, which previously allowed only two presidential terms, enabled Mirziyoyev to run for two more.
