Thousands in Helmand get job opportunities

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Local officials say thousands of people have been provided with work opportunities on welfare projects in southern Helmand province.

Maulvi Mohammad Qaseem Riaz, deputy director of information and culture, told Pajhwok Afghan News about 13,796 youth in the province had been provided with jobs.

He said youth had been employed for cleaning ponds, improving Karez systems and constructing check dams in Nehr Saraj, Sangin and Nawzad districts, as well as Lashkargah — the provincial capital..

According to him, work on the projects formally started today in Sangin and will begin soon in other district as well.

The year-long project was initiated as a result of efforts by the Information and Culture Department with technical cooperation from the World Food Program (WFP) and financial support from the World Bank, Riaz added.

He said initial work had been launched in coordination with district and local committees. The technical survey has been completed in the districts and practical work initiated in Sangin district.

On the project, 8,460 people will be employed in the provincial capital, 2,550 in Nawzad, 1,410 in Nehru Saraj and 1,376 in Sangin.

Each worker on the project, to be completed in for 12 months, would be paid 8,500 afghanis per 20 days, the official concluded.
