450 anti-narcotics operations conducted in Logar last year

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): More than 450 special operations have been conducted in central Logar province to prevent smuggling and cultivation of narcotics during the past one year, an official said on Sunday.

These operations were carried out in Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital, Azra, Kharwar, Sarkh, Mohammad Agha, Baraki Barak and Khoshi districts.

Logar police spokesman Ahmadullah Anas told reporters in Pul-i-Alam that about 350 kilograms of hashish, opium, heroin and ice were confiscated during the raids.

He added 70 people had been arrested along with six weapons and ammunition in connection with the drugs.

He also said the campaign to eradicate narcotics in six districts, including Pul-i-Alam, was ongoing successfully and so far around 350 acres of land had been cleared of hashish and poppy crops.

He said the anti-narcotics campaign would continue until Logar was made free from drugs.

Ahmadullah Irfan, the anti-narcotics campaign head, told Pajhwok that drugs cultivation and smuggling had been brought to almost zero in the province.

Irfan said about 4,000 people were made aware of the hazardous effects of drugs on human health during the past one year through an awareness campaign.

The campaign to destroy poppy and hashish cultivations has been ongoing across the country.
