Nearly 100,000 students enrolled in Balkh seminaries

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Nearly 100,000 boy and girl students are studying at 554 religious seminaries in northern Balkh province, an official said on Monday.

Abdul Jalil Shahidkhel, director of education, told Pajhwok Afghan News about 554 governmental and private seminaries were active in the province, where 99,842 students were enrolled.

He explained 5,500 teachers were teaching the students. Of them, tests/interviews for 2,000 have been completed. According to him, out of 2,000 people, 1,445 teachers, including 185 women, will be recruited.

On the other hand, some teachers who participated in the exams are happy with getting job opportunities. Under the previous government, they added, their fate was uncertain. But the IEA was paying them special attention, they acknowledged.

Faiz Mohammad Afghani, one of the candidates, said the test was being conducted for hiring seminary teachers.

He recalled before takeover the IEA takeover, little attention was paid to seminaries. But the Department of Education now appoints and pays in madrasa and school teachers alike.

Abdullah, another candidate, expressed his happiness over getting this opportunity. However, he urged the caretaker government and businesspeople to help private seminaries with food and accommodation.

The process of teacher appointments to religious schools in Balkh has been set in motion after the IEA supreme leader announced recruiting 100,000 seminary teachers across the country.
