Azizi wants Russia to join trans-Afghan rail project

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The caretaker Afghan government wants Russia and Kazakhstan to become part of the trans-Afghan railway project.

Minister of Commerce and Industry Nooruddin Azizi floated the suggestion in an interview with the state-controlled Russian news agency TASS.

“We invite Russia and Kazakhstan to join this project. In my view, it’s not just about investing in Afghanistan because this railway will benefit everyone …”

Currently in Astana, the minister said ready to meet Kazakh and Russian working groups on participation in the project.”

He proposed the creation of a joint coordination office of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in Kabul to deal with technical issues on a fast-track basis.

Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Afghanistan are building the 600-kilometre railway line connecting Termez, Mazar-i-Sharif, Kabul and Peshawar.

Once completed, the railroad will link the European Union, Russia, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Southeast Asian countries.
