Casualties as shrine comes under attack in Shiraz

KABUL (Pajhwok): A Shiite shrine has come under attack in Iran’s southern city of Shiraz, leaving at least one individual dead, media reports say.

The state-run TV quoted a local official as saying one suspect had been arrested in connection with Sunday’s shooting.

Earlier reports put the death toll at four. Fars governor Mohammad Hadi Imaniyeh said an armed terrorist, who entered the Shrine area and started shooting, was arrested.

Reuters quoted the governor as saying: “One person was killed in the attack.” Seven people, including two workers and as many pilgrims, were injured.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack on the Shah Cheragh shrine.

In last October 2022, Islamic State targeted the same shrine, killing 15 people.

Meanwhile, President Ebrahim Raisi has ordered his Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi to identify and punish the perpetrators of the attack.

The president, who is also the chairman of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), ordered Vahidi to investigate the security aspect of the incident and report the result.
