Poppy, hashish crops eradicated on 175 acres of land in Logar

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Poppy and cannabis crops on 175 acres of land have been destroyed in several districts of central Logar province, an official said on Monday.

Police spokesman Ahmadullah Anas told Pajhwok Afghan News based on the degree from the Islamic Emirate’s leadership, a poppy eradication campaign has been launched since last three months in the province.

He said so far poppy and cannabis crops covering 175 acres of land had been destroyed in Baraki Barak, Mohammad Agha, Charkh, Khoshi and Azra districts.

In response to a question, he said no survey had been conducted to know how much poppy and cannabis fields remained in the province, but the campaign to destroy the banned crops was still ongoing.

On the other hand, residents of the province welcomed the campaign.

Rahimullah, a resident of Azra district, told Pajhwok security forces had destroyed poppy and hashish on hundreds of acres of land.

He added the government should find alternative to poppy and create awareness about the hazardous effects of use of drugs on human health.

Nasratullah, a resident of the provincial capital, told Pajhwok poppy and hashish crops were widely grown in Azra district.

He said: “ We welcome the destruction of  narcotics and their cultivations by the government.”

Earlier, Logar police officials told a press conference that this year they conducted 450 special operations against drug trafficking and trade in the province.
