Iran to speed up goods transport via Khawaf-Herat railroad

KABUL (Pajhwok): Iranian authorities have assured the caretaker government of Afghanistan of cooperation in speeding up goods transportation through the Khawaf-Herat railroad.

The head of the Afghanistan Railway Authority (ARA) led a delegation to the neighbouring country on Monday for talks on accelerating commercial goods transport through the Khawaf-Herat track.

ARA said its head Mullah Bakhtur Rahman Sharafat and the delegates accompanying him met his Iranian counterpart and Minister of Roads and Urban Development in Tehran.

A statement from ARA said: “The issue of speeding up the transfer of goods through the Khawaf-Herat track was discussed and the Iranian side assured the Afghan delegation of taking practical measures.”

Both sides insisted on bilateral cooperation on the economic development of the two countries. They vowed to pay special attention to achieving the goal.

The Khawaf-Herat railroad is 225 kilometers long, with a 140 kilometers portion of it located in Iran and 85 kilometers in Afghanistan.

The railroad’s third portion is 64-kilometres long and passes through Herat’s Zindajan, Injil and Ghorian districts before reaching the Herat airport.

Construction work on the railroad was launched in 2007. The previous government had signed a $58.5 million agreement on the construction of the track with a Kazakh company.

This portion of the project had been inaugurated on December 10, 2020 by the presidents of both countries at a virtual ceremony.
