KABUL (Pajhwok): The National Environment Protection Authority (ANEPA) has said that Afghanistan’s role in greenhouse gases emission is 0.8 percent and asked the international community to resume its environment protection related projects in the country, according to a statement on Thursday.

On the ever of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer — September 16 — the NEPA statement said The Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol signed by 198 member states.

These countries are required to phase out the use of chlorofluorocarbons, which cause the destruction of the ozone layer, by 2040, and gradually eliminate them by 2050.

It added fortunately, the Cabinet of the ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’ (IEA) recently approved the Kigali Amendments to the Montreal Protocol, which aims at the gradual elimination of hydrocarbon gases, and it should be said that so far 150 countries have endorsed the Kigali Amendments Agreements.

Currently, the world is facing the negative consequences of climate change; Global warming is currently considered one of the biggest environmental challenges of the world

The statement said Afghanistan is a less developed and unindustrialized country, its greenhouse gas emissions are only 0.8 percent, but it suffers the most from climate change at the regional level and is the sixth country in the world that is more affected by climate change.

Considering the importance of protecting the ozone layer, this agency requests all citizens and government agencies, the companies that import the mentioned goods legally and on the basis of quota, to give them the necessary assistance and stop the illegal smuggling of hydrofluorocarbon gases

NEPA We requested all importing companies and workshops that deal with these gases and devices to take serious care in maintaining them so as to prevent the dangers caused by them.
