Afghan embassy in New Delhi functioning: India

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghan embassy in New Delhi continues to function, says India’s Ministry of External Affairs, days after the mission announced it was suspending operations due to lack of diplomatic support.

The embassy of Afghanistan in India has announced its closure, saying it would cease operations starting from October 1.

The Afghan embassy’s statement on Saturday said it wanted to reach an agreement with the Indian government to ensure that the interests of Afghans living, working, studying and doing business in India are safeguarded.

Rejecting the claims, Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “I don’t think they are factually correct”.

“Our understanding is that the embassy in New Delhi is functioning,” Bagchi told reporters. He added that the foreign ministry had been informed of the embassy’s decision to halt operations and was in touch with Afghan diplomats at the embassy and consulates in Mumbai and Ahmedabad, Reuters reported.

“We are also aware that there has been a prolonged absence of the ambassador, and that a large number of Afghan diplomats have left India in the recent past,” Bagchi said.
