UNHCR funded hospital inaugurated in Helmand

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): UN Refugees Agency (UNHCR) has built a hospital building in Lashkargha, the capital of southern Helmand province, and opened it for service, an official said on Tuesday.

Dr. Syed Ahmad Saeed, health Department Director, told Pajhwok Afghan News the construction work on the hospital was started nine months ago by the UNHCR at the cost of $278,969 nine months ago which was completed today.

He said the hospital has 26 health personnel and will provide health services for 65,000 families in 24 hours.

According to Dr. Saeed, earlier a clinic was also functional in the area in a rental house which lacked the capacity to address public issues.

Local residents are thrilled over the construction of the Hospital and said serious attention should be paid to equip the facility.

Abdul Malik Umari, the resident of Mukhtar Camp said: “We thank government and health care organizers for constructing a proper hospital in our areas but we want the hospital to be furnished with necessary equipment.”

Mawlavi Mohammadullah Motawakel, a community leader of Mukhtar Camp, also expressed happiness over construction of the hospital but said he population of the area is huge and there was need for another hospital of the same capacity.

He said: “Around 12,500 families live here and this only hospital is not sufficient.”

He asked the government to provide health facilities for the people while considering their population.
