Volleyball tournament featuring 52 teams starts in Paktia

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): A volleyball tournament featuring 52 teams from across southeastern Paktia province commenced on Wednesday on the university campus, Sports Department officials said.

The officials said the tournament will last 12 days and its purpose was to select players for the national level.

Qari Noorul Rahman Taskin, Paktia sports director, told Pajhwok: “This volleyball tournament is being held at the gymnasium of Paktia University. The tournament has started with participation of 25 teams from all over the province and it will continue for 12 days.”

He said the event would encourage the youth towards sports and at the end, a best team would be selected to play on national level.

According to Taskin, in the past 20 years, not much work was done to promote volleyball in Paktia and it is the first time that such an event is being held.

On the other hand, the participating teams were happy about the holding of the competitions and asked relevant departments to provide them with more facilities.

Sediqullah Abid, a player with Ittihad team, told Pajhwok: “We are happy that a volleyball tournament is being held officially and on a large scale after many years.”

He said volleyball had many fans in Paktia and the Sports Department should provide more facilities for players.
