Skipper Shahidi welcomes, assists returnees in Torkham

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi on Wednesday arrived in eastern Nangarhar province to welcome and assist refugees returning from Pakistan.

The captain distributed food to around 2,500 refugees and gave cash assistance to some children in their temporary settlement in Torkham town.

Shahidi met some refugees and also played cricket with the returning refugee children to entertain them and give them happiness.

He assured the refugees of continuing to help them. The left-handed batsman revealed he would travel to the US and England in the near future to collect aid for the returnees.

Shahidi said the national cricket players had always extended a helping hand to their countrymen and helped them in difficult times.

He also revealed he would auction the bat he played with in all matches in the World Cup and hit the game-winning shot against Pakistan to raise fund for the refugees.

The returning refugees expressed happiness for being visited by the captain and thanked him for his help.

One of them, Wali Khan, said national cricket players were the country’s pride and the nation always prayed for their success.

He added Afghanistan’s victory against Pakistan was more than winning the World Cup.

Shahidi met the refugees in Torkham two days after the national cricket team returned to the country after a memorable performance in the World Cup.
