Water dams being built in all districts to combat drought: Mujahid

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) plans to build water dams in all district of the country to combat drought.

Zabihullah Mujahid, IEA spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Ministries of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock and Energy and Water would build water dams.

Mujahid said small and medium dams were being built in every district to ensure water availability.

He added: “The level of underground water is low. The soil has gone dry. MoAIL has suggested the creation of water dams in all districts to store water and fight the drought.”

Earlier, Pajhwok published a report that states extreme weather, acute droughts, receding underground water levels by an average of 11 metres, untimely rains and floods caused by climate change have led to the displacement of people, creating a host of challenges for Afghanistan.

Experts say the country’s water resources must be properly managed; otherwise people will face a disaster. But the Ministry of Energy and Water has launched efforts to harness the country’s water resources.
