KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): A young man has been killed and another injured as an explosive remnant of of war (ERoW) went off in southern Kandahar province, local officials said on Tuesday.

This incident took place in Sarki Mandi area of Spin Boldak on the morning of Tuesday and the victims of the incident were said to be aged 21 and 35 years old, local officials explained.

The condition of the injured was stable, he said, adding the 35-year-old was taken to the Mirwais Hospital in Kandahar City.

Before this, similar incidents have taken place in different districts of the province, causing casualties to children and grown-up individuals.

Residents have repeatedly called for enhanced awareness about the threat from explosive remnants of war.

They want demining programmes to be expanded to districts to clear the areas infested with landmines and other explosives.

UNOCHA says since 1988 more than 13 million explosive remnants of war, nearly 764,000 anti-personnel mines and more than 33,460 anti-vehicle mines have been cleared in Afghanistan.

Last week, the Mine Action Review said in a report that Afghanistan was one of the three most contaminated countries of the world where mines and other explosives remain buried.

UNICEF says Afghanistan is still one of the countries with infested with landmines and children are the main victims.

Children make 85 percent of the victims of ERW incidents, UNICEF added.
