Paktia pine nuts yield down by 60 pc this year

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Pine nuts yield declined by 60 percent while its rated increased by 30 percent in southeastern Paktia province this year comparing to last year, an official said on Saturday.

Agriculture Director Mawlavi Abdul Rauf Saeed told Pajhwok Afghan News: “According to our information the pine nuts yield was not satisfactory this year comparing to the past year, due to some diseases the yield was down by 60 percent this year, last year pine nuts yield was 491.6 tonnes while this year the rate is 30 percent high.”

He said this is the nature of pine nuts trees that one year it give decent yield while the next year its yield declines.

Rahmatullah, one of the pine nuts businessmen said this year the pine nuts yield was down but its rate was higher compared to the past year.

“Last year, 52 kilograms of pine nuts were accounted for 160,000 till 200,000 rupees, but his year the price of the same quanity had reached up to 500,000 rupees in the market now.”

According to Rahmatullah there are two reasons behind the surge in the pine nuts price one is decline in yield and another is the pine nuts supply to the international markets.

In Paktia 20,000 hectres land is covered with pine nuts.
