Ex-lawmaker Dawar survives attack in Waziristan

ATLANTA (Pajhwok): Former lawmaker Mohsin Dawar has survived an armed attack in North Waziristan’s Miran Shah area, a media report said on Thursday.

Political parties and candidates have kicked off their election campaigns amid mounting security concerns ahead of the February 8 polls in the neighbouring country.

“Mohsin Dawar’s vehicle was targeted while his convoy travelled between two mountains, but the police party escorting him exchanged fire with the gunmen and the convoy remained safe,” District Police Officer Rokhanzeb Khan said.
“One person is said to have received slight injuries, and some bullets hit the front and side mirrors of his bullet proof vehicle,” he added.
Soon after receiving information of the incident, a police contingent rushed to the crime scene to secure the area.
A large number of people also came out after the announcement of the attack from local mosques to express support for the former legislator.

Dawar also wrote on his X handle his vehicle came under attack early on Wednesday morning when he was headed to a corner meeting.

He said the assailants “began with AK-47s” and were also “preparing a rocket propelled grenade (RPG)” but ran away after his companions returned fire.

Dawar stopped for a while at a local house before resuming his movement. But he again came under attack. “This time it lasted 30 to 40 minutes and once again the terrorists had to retreat,” he said.

Dawar questioned the absence of the military and vowed to “unmask these double games and the facilitation of this new great game”.
