FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Construction work on the Pamir road that will connect Afghanistan with China will be completed and put into service in the next few days in northeastern Badakhshan province, officials said on Wednesday.

Badakhshan governor Qari Mohammad Ayub Khalid told Pajhwok Afghan News construction work of the Pamir road had been started five months ago from Wakhan district to the China border and would be completed next week.

He added the highway’s construction was vital for the people of Afghanistan from economic point of view and it would also provide employment to the people.

“Work on mapping, surveying and designing the road, which is 480km from Faizabad to the China border, is underway and will be completed soon,” the governor said.

He said the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) was committed to rebuilding the country.

On the other hand, Maulvi Aminullah, Badakhshan rural rehabilitation and development director, told Pajhwok that construction work on the Pamir road was carried out 24 hours a day in Qashrok area of the district.

Haji Botto, speaking on behalf of the residents of Pamir area of Wakhan district, said the weather was cold, but work on the road continued 24 hours through advanced machinery.

He appreciated the IEA services and added: “The construction of Pamir road to the China border was a big dream, which comes true.”

Ghulam Mohammad, economic analyst in Badakhshan, said the Pamir road would benefit the people economically and added it was a long held wish of the people of Afghanistan.

He asked the IEA to start asphalting and standardizing the highway because its implementation would make Afghanistan peaceful and prosperous.
