UNAMA vows more efforts for uplift, humanitarian aid

KABUL (Pajhwok): The UN’s new deputy special representative for Afghanistan has vowed to make greater efforts to support Afghans in areas of humanitarian and development.

UNAMA’s deputy head Indrika Ratwatte held out the promise at a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Maulvi Amir Khan Muttaqi.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) quoted Muttaqi as saying the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) had created an appropriate environment for humanitarian and development work.

The enabling environment was amply reflected in the progress made in this domain over the past two years, the minister added.

Referring to his previous job as UNHCR’s head for the Asia-Pacific region, Indrika said he had made efforts to alleviate problems of Afghans, especially those residing in neighbouring countries, and returnees.

The minister assured the new deputy special representative of the UN secretary-general of full support and cooperation.
