MoI creates security unit to protect forests

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has created a security unit to protect the country’s forests, an official said on Saturday.

MoI spokesman Abdul Matin Qani in a video said: “Police are responsible to cooperate with relevant authorities in guarding and maintaining forests and natural resources”.

He said MoI had created a security unit to protect the forests from illegal destruction.

Qani added: “Police would arrest people who illegally harm natural resources of the country”.

He said police would cooperate with the ministries of agriculture, irrigation and livestock, energy and water, mines and petroleum, Environmental Protection Department and other authorities in protecting public infrastructures, natural resources and forests of the country.

Abasin Sepand, a resident of southeastern Khost province, told Pajhwok Afghan News the government was trying to protect forests and prevent illegal tree cutting.

Sabawoon Elham, another resident, said that the new security unit would prevent illegal deforestation.

On the other hand, Noor Sultani, a Kabul residenr, called the creation of the unit a good action.

He and other residents asked the government to take further measures for protection of the country’s forests.
