ICRC affirms commitment to supporting war victims

KABUL (Pajhwok): The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) is committed to providing services to war victims in Afghanistan, says an official of the humanitarian organisation.

ICRC Programme Manager Martin De Boer held out the commitment during a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs Maulvi Abdul Kabir here on Tuesday.

The Presidential Palace said in a statement De Boer thanked the interim government for its cooperation and briefed the deputy premier on ICRC activities and priorities for the next year.

Cooperation between ICRC and Afghanistan had a long history, she said, adding the organisation’s activities were focused on health services, energy and water supply, as well as reaching prisoners.

She promised ICRC would continue providing assistance to Afghan farmers and families that had lost breadwinners in war.

The ICRC has seven centres providing services to more than 10,000 disabled people every month in Afghanistan.

The deputy PM expressed his gratitude to ICRC for extending health and demining support to Afghanistan and helping prisoners. He hoped the services would continue.

Kabir also thanked other humanitarian organisations for their assistance, saying Afghanistan needed more aid due to the damage caused by natural disasters such as earthquakes, droughts and forced eviction of refugees from different countries.

He added the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) considered the services provided by international institutions and ICRC important for the people of the country, especially health services to residents of remote areas.

The security forces were trying to avoid the imprisonment of innocent individuals or on linguistic or ethnic basis.

All prisoners were enjoying their basic human rights under the incumbent government, he concluded.
