2 children killed as old landmine goes off in Nangarhar

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Two children were killed when an old landmine they had found went off in the Nazyan district of eastern Nangarhar province, police said on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Abdul Basir Zabuli told Pajhwok Afghan News that the incident took place in Zhay Sarposta area of the district late on Tuesday.

He said two children – aged between 11 and 13 – were killed in the blast.

According to him, the victims were collecting junk from garbage piles when they had found the landmine.

But a video of the brother of one of the dead children is circulating on social media, in which he says the children were killed by a mortar shell fired by Pakistani forces.

He identified the children as Noor Ahmad and his brother Muhammad Reza.

However, provincial officials have so far not corroborated the boy’s account of the incident.

Two days ago, Pakistan planes pounded some areas in Khost and Paktika provinces, inflecting casualties on civilians.
