GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Tens of thousands of students are studying under the open sky as of 250 schools in southern Ghazni province are without buildings, officials say.
In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Education Director Maulvi Naseer Ahmad Hussaini put at 680 the number of schools in the province.
According to Hussaini 150,000 students at 250 schools have to attend lessons under the open sky. The buildings of 200 schools were partially damaged in past wars needed to be repaired, he said.
The Education Department has shared the issue of school buildings with the ministry concerned in Kabul. The director hoped the problem would be resolved this year.
In Ghazni, Rashidan is the only district where all schools — two primary, as many middle and three high — are without buildings, says tribal elder Sulaiman Gul.
The elder regretted: “Students of these schools are enduring difficulties due to the lack of buildings. They are sent back home on rainy and windy days. They are taught under trees in sizzling summer.”
Gul urged the authorities to pay serious attention to their problems.
Zulmai Kochai, a teacher at the Department of Languages and Literature of Ghazni University, also asked the government to create a proper education environment for students.
Kochai commented: “This education system is disrupted by winds and rains. In summer, children are taught in the shade of trees or walls — exposed to dirt and winds. In these conditions, proper learning and satisfactory results are unlikely.”
Officials say 71 of the 680 schools in Ghazni are for girls. The number of students enrolled in these schools is more than 400,000.
