Floods cause life, property losses in Badakhshan, Laghman

FAIZABAD/MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): Residents of northeastern Badakhshan and eastern Laghman provinces suffered life and financial losses in recent rains and floods, officials said on Monday.

Yesterday, Badakhshan natural disasters management director Mohammad Kamgar said rains-induced floods destroyed about 75 acres of farming land, 20 houses, six shops and swept away three vehicles.

A survey team including representatives of humanitarian organizations headed by natural disaster preparedness director Maulvi Mohammad Akram Akbari has been formed and dispatched to Yafatal Payan district to assess the exact amount of losses and damages caused by flooding, Kamgar said.

The floods also destroyed four houses in Shuhada district, dozens of acres of cultivation land, blocked the Faizabad-Baharak highway and interrupted traffic flow on the Faizabad-Kisham highway.

Kamgar further added the floods also devastated crops on five acres of land in Liakham Village of Raghistan district.

Emal, a resident of Yaftal Payan district, complained about the damages they suffered. He said people were poor and some whose houses were destroyed lived with their relatives.

Separately, in Laghman the week-long rain and floods not only claimed lives, but also caused financial losses to people in the provincial capital and five districts.

Natural Disaster Management head Qari Khair Mohammad Ghazi said floods and rainfall destroyed three mosques, five bridges, a 8-metre retaining wall, 95 solar panels, 220 houses, 175 acres of land and killed two people and injured five others.

He asked national and international humanitarian institutions to help the affected families.
