Nearly 9,000 tons of peach yield estimated in Nangarhar this year

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock department in eastern Nangarhar province estimates this year’s peach production at nearly 9,000 tons — 1000 tons up over last year’s 8,000 tons.

Ajmal Subhani, a spokesman for the provincial Agriculture Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that peach gardens exited on 1,290 acres of land in 15 districts of the province.

“Peach orchards have been established in Behsud, Kama, Kuz Kunar, Surkhrud, Sherzad, Achin, Batikot, Lalpura, Khogyani, Chaparhar, Goshta, Dara-i-Noor, Kot and Momand Dara districts.”

Looking at these orchards, he said they had estimated this year’s yield to be 8,964 metric tons, which is an increase of about 1000 tons over last year’s harvest.

According to Subhani, last year Nangarhar produced 7,794 tons of peaches.

Around 3,000 people are directly and indirectly associated with peach orchards.

Khan Agha, who owns a peach orchard on two and a half acres of land in Behsud district, said they expected more harvest compared to the previous year.

Also, Sharifullah, a gardener in Surkhroad district, asked the government to assist farmers in finding market for their produce.
