Takhar, Badakhshan flooding leaves 23 dead

FAIZABAD/TALOQAN (Pajhwok): At least 23 people have been killed and 14 others wounded as a result of flash floods in northern Takhar and Badakhshan provinces.

Maulvi Sair Sijad, director of Natural Disaster Management Authority in Takhar, told Pajhwok Afghan News the floods hit Chal, Ishkamish, Namak Aab, and Farkhar districts late on Friday night.

According to information from the official, 20 people lost their lives, 14 others were injured and six more went missing.

In addition to casualties, he said, dozens of homes were destroyed, public facilities and crops damaged and a number of animals washed away..

Maulvi Mohammad Akram Akbari, head of the Badakhshan Natural Disaster Management Authority, said three people were killed and two others had been missing in floods, which swept through Tashkab and Tagab districts on Friday night.

He said the floods hit Yawan, Kohistan, Takshab, Tagab, Kashim, Daryem, Shahr-i-Buzorg and Warduj districts. Rescue operations are underway in the districts.

About 200 houses had been damaged in Takshab, 50 bridges and culverts, 30 small power dams, five mosques, a seminary were damaged and nearly 2,000 animals killed, he informed.
