KABUL (Pajhwok): Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber has been appointed as Iran’s interim president following the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, media reports said on Monday.

Raisi and his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were killed in a helicopter crash in country’s Azerbaijan province.

The Iranian constitution stipulates that the first vice president will take over “in the event of the president’s death, dismissal, resignation, absence or illness for more than two months,” the Independent Persian reported.

Mokhber’s appointment requires the approval of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final word in all state affairs.

Presidential elections to pick a permanent successor are to be held within 50 days, according to the constitution.

A council made up of the parliament speaker, head of the judiciary and the vice-president is to be tasked with organising the vote.

Born on Sept 1, 1955, Mokhber is seen as close to Ali Khamenei, who has the last say in all matters of state. Mokhber became first vice president in 2021 when Raisi was elected president.
