Doha meeting: Engagement with IEA on agenda

KABUL (Pajhwok): UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo will chair the third meeting on Afghanistan in Doha on June 30 and July 1.

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN secretary-general, shared at a press conference update on the conference, to be attended by special envoys for Afghanistan, on Wednesday.

The meeting would discuss how to advance international engagement on Afghanistan in a more coherent, coordinated and structured manner, he told reporters.

The Doha meeting will also confer on an independent assessment of engagement with Afghanistan, submitted to the Security Council in November 2023.

On July 2, in Doha, DiCarlo and special envoys are set to meet representatives of Afghan civil society, including human rights organisations and women’s rights advocates.

The special representative of the secretary-general and UNAMA head, Roza Otunbayeva, will also take part in all Doha discussions.

Ahead of the huddle, the under secretary-general said the ultimate objective of the Doha process was an Afghanistan at peace with itself and its neighbours, fully integrated in the international community and meeting its global obligations, including on human rights, and especially on the rights of women and girls.

At this week’s meetings, the multiple challenges facing the Afghan people would be discussed, she said, noting there would also be an opportunity to explore avenues for further principled engagement with the de facto authorities for the benefit of all Afghan people.

A delegation of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, led by Zabihullah Mujahid, will participate in the third Doha meeting.
