Poultry meat production up 58pc in Kunddz

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): In the past six months 3,000 tonnes of poultry meat has been produced in northern Kunduz province showing a 58,3 percent increase compared to the previous six months, an official said on Thursday.

Jummah Din Umarkhel, the Agriculture Department director, told Pajhwok Afghan News cooperation with the farmers, reactivation of inactive poultry farms and increase in the poultry meat export to other provinces were the main reasons behind the increase in poultry meat production.

He said in the past six months 3,000 tonnes of poultry meat was obtained from poultry farms in the province, while in the previous six months, 1,250 tonnes of poultry meat was obtained.

He said: “There are different reasons behind the increase in poultry meat production such as cooperation with poultry farmers, increase in poultry meat production and expansion of poultry farms.”

Some poultry farmers acknowledged the increase in meat production but complained about the lack of market place.

Mir Akbar, one of the poultry farmers, said: “Poultry farming has no market, in the past one kilogram of meat cost 150 afs but now it is sold at 80 afs.”

Matiullah, another farmer talked about the increase in the production of poultry meat and stressed government should explore markets for their products.

Local officials said poultry farms that were closed in the past have been revived.
