KABUL (Pajhwok): United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says sustainable humanitarian aid to Gaza would be increased.
"I welcome the start of the implementation of the ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza," Guterres stated in a post on X.
He offered the UN's willingness to assist, saying: "We stand ready to support this implementation & scale up the delivery of sustained humanitarian relief to the countless Palestinians who continue to suffer."
The UN chief also stressed the importance of removing hurdles to aid delivery. "It is imperative that the ceasefire must remove the significant security & political obstacles to delivering aid."
A ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas was signed last week with the mediation of the United States, Egypt and Qatar.
On Saturday, the Israeli security cabinet approved the ceasefire deal, which went into effect on Sunday.
More than 47,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since the beginning of the war in Gaza.
