Afghanistan, Iran agree on enhanced cooperation

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan and Iranian diplomats have underscored the need to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between Kabul and Tehran.

The Afghan ambassador in Tehran and the director-general of South Asia desk at the Iranian Foreign Ministry arrived at the agreement at a meeting.

In a statement, the Afghan embassy in Tehran said Ambassador Maulvi Fazl Mohammad Haqqani met Director General of South Asia Desk at the Iranian Foreign Ministry Mohammad Reza Bahrami.

It said: “Both sides exchanged views on the latest developments in bilateral relations, issues related to Afghan migrants residing in Iran and the strengthening of diplomatic and economic ties”.

At the meeting, emphasis was placed on accelerating the process of joint cooperation.

Afghan refugees living in Iran have repeatedly complained of ill-treatment and harassment by people and police of the neighbouring country.

Recently, Haqqani met the head of Foreigners Affairs Office at Iran’s Ministry of Interior and had discussed issues related to Afghan refugees, including their voluntary return to Afghanistan and legal residence in Iran.

Both sides agreed to establish a joint committee to address the problems of the migrants.
