SHIBERGHAAN (Pajhwok): The first-ever union of female journalists, pledging to fight for women’s rights in the region, was formed in northern Jawzjan province on Saturday.

The group of 20 females formally declared f

ormation of their union in Shiberghan, provincial capital, with Shafiqa Habibi chosen as general secretary of the Association of Female Journalists in Afghanistan (AFJA),

She said the newly-constituted union was aimed at encouraging females in the field and helping them learn modern techniques. “The union will give women the courage to work with confidence.”

Shazia Adib, a member of the body, urged training and internship opportunities for journalism students so that they could swiftly integrate into the media industry. The body chose Fatima Naik Rasuli as their representative.

Rasuli pledged efforts to mobilise more females into the profession and provide jobs for them.

Female journalists have already set up unions in Kabul, Nangarhar, Herat, Balkh, Bamyan and Samangan provinces. Efforts were underway to unite female journalists in remaining provinces.
