KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The provincial agricultureinfo-icon department of northeastern Kunduz predicts over 100,000 tons of watermelon harvest in the province this solar yearinfo-icon.

Kunduz agriculture director Abdul Hadi Qarlaq said the climate this year more suited watermelon in the province --- a reason behind the increased harvest.

In a statement, Qarlaq said around 3,460 hectares of land was cultivated with watermelon in Kunduz this year and the fruit was approximated to reach more than 100,000 tons.

Last year, around 3,334 hectares of land was cultivated with watermelon in the province which produced around 93,352 tons of the fruit, he added.

He said farmland for melon was also expanded this year by 17 hectares, bringing the total land to 4,365 hectares and the fruit’s production was expected to reach 102,400 tons.

Meanwhile, a number of farmers in Kunduz also say that their watermelon farms gave better yield this year.

Zarif, a farmer from Gultepa district said he grew melon and watermelon on 140 acres of land and he would collect more of the fruit this year compared to last year.

Happy about the increase in yield this year, he said, “We want the government to help us find a better market for our products or build cold houses for protection of our crops so we will be able to offer the products to the market based on demand.”

Kunduz agriculture officials say the government had supported farmers in the past and a project for management of agricultural products was also recently started in the province.

Provincial agriculture department says work on building 104 storages for onion, 15 storages for potatoes, 102 raisin houses and five cold storages has been started and would complete in the next few months.
