KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Womeninfo-icon’s rights activists on Monday said they wanted lasting peace, the republic system, women’s greater role in governance and protection of the Constitution.

Afghanistaninfo-icon achieved much during the past two decades in areas of democracy, fundamental freedom, civil rights, women’s participation in affairs and human rights, the activists said in a statement.

They said “Today we have thousands of widows, disabled and poor families in our societyinfo-icon, and unfortunately in some cases women were sold and bought during the war.”

It was why the women of Afghanistan wanted a dignified and lasting peace and protection of values in the country, the statement read.

It said the republic system was the most accepted values in the worldinfo-icon because of people’s participation in formation of the government.

The statement further said the country’s constitution enshrined equal rights to citizens irrespective of their ethnicity and religious diversity. The constitution guaranteed freedom of expression, respect to human rights and participation of women in decision making.

“The second chapter of the constitution which includes fundamental rights and duties of people is the basis for the protection and guarantee of rights of citizens and, if necessary, emphasizes the protection of this chapter by Afghan women,” the statement said.

The statement said the Afghan security and defense forces and trained Afghan National Police and army maintained stability and order in the country at the cost of their lives.

It added the Afghan women not only insist on maintaining these forces to strengthen the Islamic Republic but also appreciate and respect their sacrifices.

Women’s rights activists also urged protection of their rights, saying women always played a significant role in the growth and development of the country and contributed to Afghanistan’s political, social, cultural and economic development over the past two decades.
