NATO, Afghan forces aid Parwan flood victims

NATO, Afghan forces aid Parwan flood victims

Aug 29, 2020 - 12:06

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): NATOinfo-icon forces and their Afghan counterparts have provided critical assistance to the victims of floods in central Parwan province.

Earlier in the week, flash floods devastated Charikarinfo-icon, Parwan’s capital, killing more than 100 people and damaging hundreds of homes.

In a statement, NATO’s Resolute Support Commander Gen. Scott Miller, during a visit to the province, expressed his grief over the flood-causes losses.

“Let me offer my condolences to the people of Parwan for the loss of life and loss of property and to all the families that are affected,” he said.

Afghan forces are leading recovery efforts, search and rescue and clearing debris in the affected areas of the province.

NATO has so far donated halal meals, water and personal hygiene kits and blankets which were flown in on Coalition aircraft to help victims.

Gen. Miller was accompanied by acting Minister of Defence Asadullah Khalid and Independent Directorate of Local Governance Director Samim Katawazia.

The statement said the officials assessed the damage and reassured local leaders they would receive the support needed during the crisis.

“Let me also offer my thanks to the people of Parwan for your leadership and the security forces that are stepping forward to try to alleviate the suffering of the people,” Miller added.

“They are your sons and daughters. I would ask all of you to be very vocal about your support. You have every right to be proud of them.”

Miller recognised the sacrifices Afghan forces bear as they work to secure peace in the country despite ongoing high levels of Talibaninfo-icon violence.

“I always tell the Taliban, I tell the worldinfo-icon, that the violence needs to come down. That is very important for the people of Afghanistaninfo-icon.”
