KABUL) said in a statement.

Ismail Jan was the deputy to the senior Haqqani commander inside Afghanistan, Haji Mali Khan. Jan and several Haqqani fighters were killed in strike, which took place in the Tin Gardez district of Paktia province, according to the statement.

ISAF says that the Haqqani network and Taliban operatives were responsible for the attack on the Intercontinental Hotel, in which 12 civilians and security forces were killed. The nine attackers also died.

Jan led roughly 25 to 35 fighters in attacks against Afghan and ISAF security forces after moving into Afghanistan from Pakistan in late 2010, according to the statement.

ISAF says Afghan government officials, Afghan citizens and “disenfranchised insurgents” provided the coalition with the intelligence that led to Jan. The airstrike killed Jan and “several other insurgents.”

Afghan-led security forces have captured or killed more than 80 Haqqani leaders and facilitators since January, primarily in Paktika, Paktia and Khost provinces, according to ISAF’s statement.
