ASADABAD (PAN): Four saw machines and timber depots were gutted by a huge fire in Asadabad, the capital of eastern Kunar province, on Friday.

The blaze, which erupted at 2am and was controlled at 6am, also burnt eight carpentry shops, Governor Fazlullah Wahidi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Firefighters struggled for hours to put out the blaze, whose cause is yet to be ascertained, he said. A delegation has been tasked with investigating the incident and assessing the scale of losses.

It was a huge fire that devoured his timber, said Haji Fazlullah, who estimated his losses at 22 million afghanis. He asked the government either to let him sell his timber within the city or allocate a safe place for it outside the provincial capital.

Around nine million cubic feet of felled lumber is lying in stores across the province, but the government has banned its transportation.
