AIBAK (PAN): An eight-kilometre road, connecting several mountainous areas with the capital of northern Samangan province, was inaugurated on Saturday, an official said.

The World Bank-funded project that cost more than $500,000 (24,500,000 afghanis) took nine months to complete, the deputy director of public works said.

Zia Humayun told Pajhwok Afghan News the five-metre wide road would connect 25 villages in Taikhonak and Manqotan areas with Aibak. Five bridges and a 200-metre protective wall were also constructed as part of the project, he added.

Resident Mullah Abdul Samad said the road would help resolve the problems earlier faced by residents. Previously, he recalled, people had to cover a distance of 120 kilometres to reach the provincial capital.
