KABUL on Wednesday said that 4,400 insurgents had so far joined the reintegration programme since its launch in 2009.

Director of the Force Reintegration Cell (FRC) of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Maj. General David Hook said the initiative had been launched in accordance with the Afghan government’s demand.

About $200 million (10 billion afghanis) had been allocated for the programme, provided by the US, Japan and other countries, he told a news conference in Kabul. In recent months, there has been a 25 percent increase in reintegration.

But the ISAF official also said some people had joined the IRP under the name of Taliban in a bid to receive money. In order to prevent the misuse of the programme, Hook sought cooperation from Afghan officials.

Each of the people reintegrated was paid id=”mce_marker”20 per month, he said, explaining the IRP was an Afghan-led programme and the international community only played a supportive role.
