Afghanistan elected vice president of UN assembly

WASHINGTON (PAN has been elected as the vice president for the upcoming United Nations (UN) General Assembly, reflecting the growing recognition of the country at international level.

The election was held last week where Vuk Jeremic, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia defeated Dalius Cekuolis, Lithuanian Ambassador to the UN.

Serbia was elected as the president of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.

Jeremic secured 99 votes to defeat Cekuolis who received 85 votes.

The meeting also elected vice-presidents from different regions of the world for the 67th session of the assembly and Afghanistan was one of the five vice- presidents from the Asia group.

Zahir Tanin, the Afghan Ambassador to the UN, would represent the country in this position. 

Tanin had previously served as a vice-president of the 63rd and 65th sessions of the assembly.

Besides Afghanistan, other vice-presidents for the 67th session are Algeria, Angola, Bangladesh, China, Congo, France, Ghana, Honduras, Israel, Lebanon, Nepal, Netherlands, Palau, Peru, Russian Federation, Sierra Leone, Trinidad & Tobago, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Notably, Tanin is currently serving as Chair of the Inter-Governmental Negotiations on Security Council Reform in his fourth consecutive general assembly session.

Afghanistan has already presented its candidature to the main body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the UN for the terms 2016-2018.

It is also a candidate for the president of the 75th session of the

assembly and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2021-2022 term.
